In December 2016, I was sitting at a “Date with Destiny” Tony Robbins event trying to figure out what I needed to do next with my life. We spent 6 days working on it and trying to map out what an ideal life would look like. I remember sitting there on day 4 or 5 and was trying to think of a way I could bring an event like that to all of my family and friends. I was so inspired and I was learning so much that I just wanted to be able to spread the messages I was hearing to others that I care about.
That got me thinking about other conversations I just had a few days before with amazing people like Tim Ballard, Dave Bateman, and Utah attorney general Sean Reyes. I decided that one of my "big goals" for 2017 was to create a podcast where I could highlight these friends of mine and allow other people to “sit in” on conversations between us. This would be my way of sharing my network and the amazing people I was lucky enough to be around all the time.
Because a goal needs to be measurable I decided that “make a podcast” wasn’t clear enough. I didn’t just want to create a podcast but I wanted to really put a lot of time and effort into making it a great podcast. I decided that if I could get 10,000 listeners per episode then that would signal to me that we were a success. Problem is, like with most things if we let them, life happened and the project was put off. I still had it as a big goal but it kept getting pushed back.
Finally my business mentor said to me, “You are putting this off because you are still thinking about it in terms of what is in it for you and that doesn’t inspire you. What will it do for other people and how will it effect their lives if you actually do it?” This was exactly what I needed to hear and it inspired me into action.
I thought about my nieces and nephews 5,10, 20 years from now thinking about starting a business, being able to listen in as Rick Clayton talks about starting Hogi Yogi or Dan Young talks about building up PC Laptops. I thought about my nephew getting stuck on a sports team where he isn’t getting playing time and how he can listen to my friend Kyle Van Noy and hear how he was stuck in the exact same position with the Lions only a few months before being traded to the Patriots and winning the Super Bowl.
We are coming up on the year mark and I have now recorded over 90 episodes with some of the most amazing people I have ever met. This past week we just released my favorite episode as I had the chance to sit down and interview former Gov. Mitt Romney. I left the interview that night with a sense of gratitude, not so much because I thought I had done something great, but because I knew I had just put out something to the world that will benefit 100’s and 1000’s of people that I might not ever even know about.
This morning I got a call from someone in California. This is a person that I have never met, someone that found the podcast 60 episodes ago and has become a fan. He had a rough year and went through a divorce and a loss of his primary income. He talked to me about how the podcast has helped get him through the roughest period in his whole life. I was deeply grateful that someone loved me enough to challenge me and to remind me that me playing small wasn’t benefitting the world around me.
There are people in your life that need you. They need you to follow up on a dream that you have, a commitment that you have made. What is it that you keep thinking about doing but still haven’t? Your fear is selfish as was mine. I’ve been so nervous so many times that my audio wasn’t quality enough, my show wasn’t interesting enough, or that my podcast wasn’t going to get listened to. It still isn’t perfect but by making a decision and putting something out to the world I have been able to bless people that I will never even get to know.
Attached is a link to the Mitt Romney episode, I encourage you to give it a listen. This is a man that stands for everything that a husband, father, and business man should be. I don’t care what your view on politics are, listen to it and learn what lessons you can from a life worth living.
